At Meadow Farm Museum, you can experience first-hand what middle class rural life was like in the 1860s. This living history museum is located on the grounds of Crump Park and is owned and operated by the County of Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks. The property was donated to the county in 1975 by Elizabeth Adam Crump in memory of her husband, Major General Sheppard Crump. General Crump was a member of the Sheppard Family who owned Meadow Farm since 1713. It was General Crump’s wish that Meadow Farm be preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of the public as a passive recreation area.
Today, Meadow Farm Museum staff and volunteers re-create everyday life on a middle-class farm in Henrico County between 1860 and 1864. By wearing period clothing and hairstyles, and emulating specific speech patterns, the staff and volunteers are able to portray an accurate reflection of those that once lived at Meadow Farm. On selected weekends, they demonstrate seasonal activities in the farmhouse, barn, doctor’s office, blacksmith forge, kitchen, fields, and pastures.
In addition to capturing the history of life on the farm, Meadow Farm Museum and more specifically Crump Park is host to several programs and events throughout the year. Some of the most popular events that take place in this venue are Civil War Days, Harvest Festival, Holiday Lantern Tours, Sheep to Shawl, and the ever popular Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. These events are free and fun for the entire family!
