It’s 7 pm on a sweltering, early summer Friday evening. The streets of Shockoe Bottom are snarled with traffic. It’s going to be a busy night in Richmond’s dining and entertainment district. Just a few feet below street level a couple walks hand-in hand. A gentle breeze along the canal provides some refreshing relief. A family of four sits on a bench waiting. Others stand along the canal at the turning basin (located at 14th and dock streets). All are waiting to board the boat. The boat is one of several 35 passenger covered boats that ply the canal daily, providing locals and visitors alike with one of the most informative, enjoyable and relaxing attractions the city has to offer. If one took the 40-minute, reasonably priced cruise just to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, he or she would be well pleased. But, the cruise becomes even more attractive to those with an interest in history. Informative and entertaining ship captains provide the narrative. By the time we disembark, I am more convinced than ever that Richmond is truly one of the nation’s most fascinating cities. Take the cruise and discover your own fascinations. Reactions of those with whom I spoke following our journey included: "This is truly a unique experience.” “I loved it. I’m going to bring my friends here.” “This is a hidden treasure that I did not know was available in Richmond.” It is available, daily, and whether it’s watching a muskrat or turtle navigate the waterway, getting a unique view of some of the city’s most historical buildings, or just enjoying a quiet respite from the world above, the canal cruise offers something for everyone.
