A Day At... is brought to you by Meghan F. Coates, MS, Special Events Coordinator, Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation.
This 188-acre park features a preserved natural habitat, including borders on the Appomattox River and the tidal marsh of Ashton Creek, and a rich history. Visitors to the park can enjoy numerous athletic facilities, picnic shelters and a playground. Additionally, the park features a beautiful boardwalk on Ashton Creek and 2.7 miles of trails. In the early days of the Civil War’s Bermuda Hundred Campaign, Gen. Benjamin F. Butler established his headquarters near here. A large line of earthworks and a 110-foot signal tower were also constructed on the land adjacent to the park. Additionally, Abraham Lincoln was said to have visited the area after the war in 1865. The earthworks can still be seen today along the edge of the park road. Whether you’re taking in the history of the sight or enjoying the recreational opportunities it offers, R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks has something to offer most any visitor. Free admission. Open dawn to dusk. www.chesterfield.gov/parks 201 Enon Church Road, Chester, VA 23831 804-748-1623
