A Day At... is brought to you by Meghan F. Coates, MS, Special Events Coordinator, Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation.
The John J. Radcliffe Appomattox River Conservation Area is the third conservation area to be acquired and managed by Chesterfield County. The site, located directly below Brasfield Dam, adjoins the Appomattox River Canoe Launch and bears the name of its former owner. The site consists of 80 acres that line the bank of the Appomattox River for over a mile. The entire property occupies a wide floodplain and includes a 50-acre wetland, a bottomland forest, vernal pools, some small streams and a scattering of islands. The Radcliffe property is home to an abundance of wildlife including turkey, otters, beavers, and an array of flora and fauna.
While there you can enjoy a leisurely stroll or run along the trail and boardwalk. With limited development, the site will allow you to truly enjoy nature’s beauty. The conservation area is one vital piece of a master plan to create a greenway that will hopefully run the course of the Appomattox from Lake Chesdin to the Village of Ettrick.
