At the young age of 13, Erwin Franke discovered a passion for rugs. He worked all summer in his hometown in Germany for a total of about $700. When passing by the window display of a local rug shop, he fell in love with a rug that he purchased for $650. “I was fascinated by the signs describing the rugs – their age, where they came from, the knot count, their history,” Franke recalls. But this particular one that still remains in his home today truly spoke to him. “I loved its look, color and textures,” he stated.
After he graduated Franke went to work in that same shop and later migrated to the United States. Here he opened his own store, Erwin Franke’s World of Rugs in Midlothian, where customers are greeted with a wide selection of unique, handmade rugs from all over the world. To say that Franke is an expert in handmade rugs is an understatement. “When I look at a rug, I can instantly tell you what region it came from, or by what village or tribal group the rug was made,” Franke says.
Franke’s focus is on building a relationship with his customers. He visits their homes and learns about all elements of the clients’ room – furniture, size, color and style – before offering an array of choices. The finishing touch? Franke delivers and personally lays out each rug he sells.
